Survival kits touch families 'An act of kindness' for some

For the second year, Hospitality House of Tulsa kicked off its annual fundraising campaign by giving to others.
Volunteers handed out 350 waiting-room survival kits to families in 16 area hospitals last week as part of the nonprofit's Room in the Inn, Room in our Hearts campaign.
Hospitality House provides free lodging and meals to people who have family members in medical crisis in area hospitals.
Toni Moore, president and CEO, said Hospitality House provides rooms to 190 families a year, but there is always a waiting list.
"The need is so huge," Moore said.
About 25,000 people travel to Tulsa for in-patient treatment every year and 50 percent of those are on Medicare, Medicaid or are uninsured, she said, meaning their families likely can't afford long hotel stays.
Providing waiting families with kits that included bottled water, snacks, a pillow, blanket, reading material and personal hygiene items is something simple the organization can do.
The items in the kits were donated by individuals, companies and churches. Puzzles, books and crayons were also handed out to children in waiting rooms.
Beth Ann Wallace, spokeswoman for Hillcrest Medical Center, said what Hospitality House does is really important.
"Until you are in the position of waiting for a family member to heal, you don't understand what it's like," Wallace said. "Families are appreciative; hospitals are also appreciative."
Most people who receive the waiting- room survival kits are touched by the generosity, Moore said.
"It's nice to see an act of kindness today," said Henryetta resident Wilma Hayes, who was in the Hillcrest surgery waiting room Thursday night. "It makes you wish you could see more acts of genuine kindness. Makes you long for that."
Pryor resident Al Hanel, who had been waiting with five other family members at Hillcrest for almost 12 hours, said the kit was a happy surprise.
"This was a welcome break for us," said Hanel as he was waiting to hear about his brother-in-law's surgery Thursday.
Hospitality House also puts on a 15-minute Christmas light show synchronized to music at its location at 11th Street and Victor Avenue every night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. until Jan. 3. The show contains 5,100 lights representing the number of nights Hospitality House offered lodging to people last year.
